How to Let Children Get Over Their Fear of the Dark

As a mom, you would like to make sure that you will keep your children protected at all times but at the same time, you also want them to get over some of their fears that might not help them too much in life. A lot of children are afraid of the dark probably because of the belief that only bad things can happen when it is dark.

There may be other things that children are afraid of like their closet, the oven and under their beds but what makes a lot of children freak out is the lack of light. This makes a lot of children become all scared and afraid. You do not want this to continue so what will you do so that they can get over this fear?

How to Let Children Get Over Their Fear of the Dark

Perhaps you can start by asking children questions that they can easily answer. You may want to ask what makes the dark scary. Remember not to make fun of children while they are giving their honest opinions why they are scared of the dark. After they have explained your side that is when you can start assuring them depending on their answers why the dark is not something to be feared.

You may also want to ask children what are the creatures that they believe may be lurking in the dark. Once they explain and try to describe how the creatures look, reassure them that those creatures will not be there in the dark. Instead of trying to dispel these creatures, try to let them realize that these creatures will not be able to harm them because they are stronger than these creatures. Try to teach them your beliefs as well.

There are still other things that you can do in order to stop your child’s fear of the dark such as the following:

  • Avoid letting your child see scary pictures or frightening videos online. One of the reasons why children’s imaginations may run wild is because of the things that they have seen that they are not supposed to see from the very start.
  • Help in building up your child’s self-confidence. One of the reasons why children may have a lot of fears is because they do not believe in their capabilities and what they can do. Let them know that they are strong enough to do the things that they would set their hearts in. You may also want to improve on how your children can cope with the changes that they will experience.
  • Tell fun and happy bedtime stories at night. Try to avoid exposing your children to bedtime stories that will truly scare them. Stick with light and funny stories that they will be delighted to hear often.

There are so many things that you can do so that you can dispel your child’s fear of the dark. Aside from fear of the dark, your child may also forget about the other things that they are scared of.
